Petronas Chemicals Group (PCG) will be building a 60,000 tons per annum melamine plant in Gurun, Kedah, Malaysia, making it the sole melamine producer in Southeast Asia. Targeted to come onstream in 2024, this project is in line with PCG’s growth journey to expand into derivatives by adding value to the molecules from its existing products such as urea, methanol, polyolefins, and others. PCG, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Petronas Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah (PCFK), will be using the urea produced from PCFK as the feedstock to produce melamine. “This is a significant milestone for PCG and further strengthens our strategy of diversifying our product portfolio. By housing the plant within the vicinity of PCFK, we will be able to maximise the overall value through the integration of feedstock and utilities with the existing PCFK facility,” informs Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Managing Director and CEO, PCG.
About melamine
Melamine is a fundamental organic raw material in fine chemical with excellent flame retardant properties for variety of applications. At present, melamine is mainly used for condensation with formaldehyde to generate melamine formaldehyde resin (referred to as MF resin). Melamine formaldehyde resin exhibits excellent fire resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, aging resistance, arc resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, good thermal insulation performance, gloss and mechanical strength. It is suitable for wood, plastic, paint, paper, textile, leather, electrical appliances, medicine, concrete Indispensable chemical raw materials such as super plasticizes.
SINOYQX is producing melamine 50,000 tons annually.
