Why can Melamine-impregnated Paper Dominate the Market on a Large Scale?

I don’t know since when, it is no longer popular to paint the furniture panels in our lives, but to use panels directly pasted with facing paper, which is beautiful, elegant, convenient and practical.

Melamine-impregnated paper is a representative board finishing material. Its full name is Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde Impregnated Bond Paper, also known as “melamine” paper. It is an adhesive paper with a certain resin content and volatile content that is impregnated with amino resin (melamine formaldehyde resin and urea-formaldehyde resin) and dried to a certain extent. It can be glued to each other or to artificial boards after hot pressing.

Classification & Advantages

Melamine impregnated paper can be divided into two categories: top paper and bottom paper according to product use. Top paper serves as surface decoration and performance enhancement of the board. Plain paper and printed paper with printed patterns are usually used. The function of the bottom paper is to strengthen the surface performance of the board and balance the bending tension of the board. It is usually produced with poor quality balance paper or cheaper plain paper. Melamine-impregnated paper is widely used in cabinets, wardrobes, and laminate floor veneers.

Melamine glue is an amino-based resin that contains a certain amount of formaldehyde. During the glue preparation process, the impregnation manufacturer should control the amount of formaldehyde released within the national standards.

The melamine content determines the wear-resistant quality of the melamine facing paper. The higher the content, the better the moisture-proof and mildew-proof effect. High-quality impregnated paper has a melamine content of 100%, followed by 50%. Most of the impregnated papers currently use 50% melamine content. The shelf life of pure melamine impregnated paper can be more than 1 year, but the cost is higher than 50%. The plain base paper is impregnated with melamine resin and additives to form melamine-impregnated paper. The melamine-impregnated paper and boards (density board, particle board, plywood) are hot-pressed with steel plates in a hot press to become decorative panels.

Craftsmanship

In order to ensure the quality of impregnated adhesive film paper, high-quality decorative base paper must be used. No matter what kind of paper, it should be inspected and passed before it can be used. Unqualified paper cannot enter the production line. During the impregnation process, the operation should be strictly carried out in accordance with the process requirements and sampling and testing should be carried out at the specified time to ensure that the glue amount is 120% ~ 160%, the volatile content is 5% ~ 8%, and the pre-curing degree is ≤ 65%. The impregnated and dried adhesive film paper must be immediately wrapped in plastic film and sealed with tape.

The production process is glue making → glue preparation (adding curing agent, release agent, etc.) → first impregnation (urea-formaldehyde resin) → first drying → second impregnation (melamine formaldehyde resin) → second drying → cooling and cutting .

Key indicators

Melamine impregnated paper is measured by the amount of impregnation, volatile matter content, and pre-curing degree.

  1. Dip amount: The content of solid resin in the decorative adhesive film paper, expressed as a percentage (%).
  2. Volatile matter content: The content of volatile matter (mostly moisture and other small molecules) in the decorative film paper, expressed as a percentage (%).
  3. Pre-curing degree: The curing degree of the resin in the decorative film paper, expressed in percentage (%).

Usage effect

Melamine impregnated paper has advantages that other decorative papers and paints do not have:

It can simplify the production process of artificial panels, eliminating the need for spray painting and brushing processes; enhance the value of artificial panels, beautify the appearance of materials, and provide use value; improve physical properties and expand the scope of use.

In the current panel furniture market, melamine veneer panels still dominate. With the shortage of human wood resources and the increasing demand for human pursuit of wood products, melamine impregnated paper will also develop better in the 21st century!
